Love Among the Ruins
Valentine’s Day is nearing as is time for our hearts to turn to expressions of love. Should it be a beautiful card? A box of chocolates? A dozen roses? A romantic dinner for two? Maybe this year should be different. Instead of turning to the traditional trappings of Valentine’s Day paraphernalia, perhaps we can gain some inspiration from the great gods of the ancient world. From Zeus’ many loves to Narcissus’ self-love, from Krishna’s love for Radha to Apollo’s lust for Daphne, we will examine how the great gods expressed and experienced love. This lecture will focus on the tales of their romantic passions and will examine how artists through the centuries have portrayed the amorous adventures of the gods. We will look at godly games of courtship and romance, of consummation and consequence. Take this opportunity to sit back, be amused, and observe the ancient patterns of love and romance.
