Learn the basics and get started with kayaking! This course is perfect for those with little or no experience. We provide all necessary equipment and basic instruction. It’s great exercise and an exciting way to enjoy the serenity of the water and get close enough to watch marine life without disturbing the environment. Using “sit on top-style” kayaks that are stable and easy to maneuver, Eckerd College waterfront instructors will teach basic paddling techniques in Frenchman’s Creek and Boca Ciega Bay.
Participants must complete and pass the Eckerd College swim test prior to the start of class, and bring their lifeguard-signed card to the class with them. Participants must be physically able to get in and out of a kayak, and sit in the kayak for the duration of the class. This entire class is taught outside on the water. Please dress for the weather and potential swimming, wear shoes that can get wet and will stay on your feet, and bring sunscreen and a reusable water bottle. Please leave valuables at home because there is always a chance of them getting wet or lost overboard.
