Did you know we lose 5–8% of our lean muscle every 10 years after age 30 and it increases after we turn 60? Most older adults don’t get enough protein or engage in strength training to avoid sarcopenia, the loss of muscle tissue that is a natural part of the aging process.
OLLI at Eckerd College is partnering with VIVO to offer our members the opportunity to build strength and improve balance and mobility with live online strength classes specifically designed for older adults. Our collaboration with Vivo allows us to offer these classes to our members at a 45% discount. These classes offer a unique opportunity for those who are new to exercise or interested in beginning/resuming strength building. Maintaining strength is key to preserving your posture, balance, mobility and independence. And strength training even improves sleep!
Muscle strength and balance are critical to maintaining health and independence as we age. Without additional strength training, most older adults will suffer a loss of muscle tone that can negatively impact their balance and mobility. Vivo, a live, online, interactive strength-building course customized to your fitness level, helps you attain physical fitness. Vivo exercise sessions consist of cognitive, balance and strength exercises. Classes are small and instruction is individualized. Certified personal trainers, skilled in working with older adults, provide modified exercises to meet each student's fitness needs. Classes meet twice a week for 45 minutes. Participants receive personal strength assessments at the beginning and end of the course that measure their strength, balance and mobility — a critical health strategy for people over 55. Whether you are new to exercise or exercise regularly, Vivo will help you build your strength. Active Skill Learning.
Please note: Initial personal assessments need to be completed between May 1 and May 14, 2023. Registered participants will receive an email with a link to schedule their assessment and a waiver. Final strength assessments will be completed the week of July 10 to July 14.
This online program is not included in OLLI at Eckerd College's e-class all-access pass. Sessions are not recorded. There is a $50 non-refundable fee included in the tuition cost.
