Yugoslavia and Failed Dreams of Multinationalism

From the Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes through the Yugoslav Experiment, the diverse people of the region united into a pluralistic kingdom and then socialist federation in the 20th century: ‘Balkanization’, a term adopted into English, ultimately prevailed,  We will look at the rise and fall of Yugoslavia, the successes and failures of the pluralistic country and how the government as well as communities dealt with the diversity. The relevance of lessons learned from the failed Yugoslav experiment for other pluralistic societies, including the EU and the US, will be discussed.
