Galaxy Formation and Evolution

Modern concepts of galaxies originated with Edwin Hubble and other astronomers about a century ago. Classification of images of these systems of stars, gas and dust led naturally to questions about how they formed and changed over time. Applications of astronomical instruments like the James Webb Space Telescope and sophisticated computer modelling in the past 25 years have combined to provide significant advances in our understanding of how our universe of galaxies has changed. A brief review of the early history of cosmology will be followed by an update on recent developments and a preview of what will come soon.
