New Objectivity: Art After the Great War   

After World War I, Germany gave rise to the artistic movement New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit). Artists associated with this movement served in the German army or were directly affected by the war; their experiences deeply influenced their world views and their art. They became disillusioned and cynical as German politics shifted to the right. Their aim was to present a clear-eyed, direct and honest image of the war and its effects. This class will discuss the artwork of George Grosz, Otto Dix, Max Beckman, and others whose art focused on the horrors of war, social hypocrisy, moral decadence, the plight of the poor, and the rise of rise of Nazism.
