Before the Thirteen Colonies

In 1787, Thomas Jefferson noted that America’s earliest history was preserved in Spanish writings. This course explores that legacy through the chronicles and letters of the Spaniards who began journeying through La Florida after Ponce de León’s arrival in 1513. Read in English translation, these vivid accounts—of new landscapes, Indigenous civilizations, and the wonders of the natural world—invite us to rediscover the beginnings of American history from a seldom-seen perspective.
