Description: Following triumphant Live in HD performances in Gounod’s Roméo et Juliette, Verdi’s La Traviata, and Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, Nadine Sierra summits another peak of the soprano repertoire as Amina, who sleepwalks her way into audiences’ hearts in Bellini’s poignant tale of love lost and found. In his new production, Rolando Villazón—the tenor who has embarked on a brilliant second career as a director—retains the opera’s original setting in the Swiss Alps but uses its somnambulant plot to explore the emotional and psychological valleys of the mind. Tenor Xabier Anduaga co-stars as Amina’s fiancé, Elvino, alongside soprano Sydney Mancasola as her rival, Lisa, and bass Alexander Vinogradov as Count Rodolfo.

If you have Acrylic Flow Art painting experience and are able to mix paints and complete flow paintings independently, this special interest group is for you. Practice your techniques, obtain guidance from facilitators, and enjoy some fellowship with other OLLI acrylic flow painters. No formal instruction provided.
Learn more here:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1JGqxaALbaoqQlW8cgnbgcqwoKGf_edlD?usp=sharing
Come with your own canvas and paint materials or just bring any size canvas and for a small materials fee and use the paints and additives provided by the facilitator. (The fee will be paid directly in cash at the time of the SIG and will vary from artist to artist based on the amount of colors, quality of paints selected and the overall size of your canvas. See below for more information.)
During the session, painting tools and materials (pallet knives, tweezers, torches, spinners, chains, gloves, paper towels, mixing cups, etc) will be available for use. In addition, a ‘sealing’ station with Minwax Polycrylic Sealer will be available to seal fully dried paintings from your previous OLLI Flow Art classes. Due to the size of Room CE-309, each date of this SIG will be limited to twelve (12) registrants.
Materials Fee: If you are electing to purchase mixed acrylic paint and additives for your canvas instead of bringing your own, the cost will be based upon the size of your canvas in square inches and technique(s) you plan to apply. (Approximately $1 - $1.50 per ounce)
For example: A 16” x 20” canvas (320 square inches of surface canvas) with ½” depth edges (18 square inches of edge canvas) will have a total surface to be painted of 336 square inches. The 336 square inches will require approximately 13 ounces of paint (335/25) resulting in a paint cost of between $13 and $20.50.

Description: Beginning in 1989, the United States initiated the National Film Registry to preserve “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant films” that showcase the range and diversity of American film heritage under the direction of the Library of Congress. As of 2025, 900 films of all types including documentaries, newsreels, feature films, and even home movies have been selected for preservation. Of the tens of thousands of films made since 1891, about 500 chosen for National Film Registry distinction have been feature films, for an average of only 3 per year out of the hundreds produced annually. Significantly, 18 films made in 1939 have been thus honored. Cinephiles generally acknowledge that 1939 was indeed “Hollywood’s Greatest Year”, but why was that so? This session will examine Hollywood’s output for that incredible year, including a review of many of the best films with over 40 clips from such 1939 classics as Gone With the Wind, The Wizard of Oz, Beau Geste, and many more, and will discuss the key factors that resulted in such an extraordinary burst of creativity.

Yet the family of one of these industrialists played a major role in introducing Americans to the paintings of Monet. We will hear how the first Impressionist painting entered an American art collection in the 1870s and why Domino Sugar played a major role in this story. Bill Averyt is a guide at the Shelburne Museum near Burlington, Vermont, in the summer months. Description: Before the huge, steam-driven machines that would cut through Suez and Panama, magnificent canals and aqueducts graced the ancient civilizations and the early modern ones. In this class, we follow the progression from primitive channels dug out to water a few snatch crops to canals that changed the world long before the age of steam, internal combustion engines or electric power. We’ll visit China, Egypt, The Pontine Marshes, the south of France, the English coal country and – finally – the early American frontier, where one four-foot ditch changed the world.

As a young girl, encouraged to pursue her creative instincts, she wrote plays to be produced by her family to entertain themselves and friends. Later, she turned to writing novels of headstrong heroines of varying social and economic strata caught in romantic entanglements. Additional Notes: Tuesday Timely Topics: Foster care and adoption in Florida: what we should know.
Foster care and adoption is largely misunderstood, but critical to the success of our communities. Childhood trauma is multi-generational. How these children are treated means the difference between a successful adult or more generations of trauma. Attendees will learn about ACE (the number of traumatic, adverse childhood experiences) scores and take their own ACE evaluation. Attendees will learn the most common reasons for removing a child from their parents, different types of placements, the role grandparents and fictive kin play in placements, and the behavior and educational challenges these children face. We'll end with examples of successful and resilient foster children who have gone on to be community leaders. Attendees who choose to donate will be able to pick a foster child and provide holiday gifts through the non-profit local Hero To A Child program.

Description: In the post war years of the 1940’s and ’50’s because of the devastation in Europe, the center of western art world shifted from Paris to New York where American artists like Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning carried forward the energy of the avant-garde. Their art, Abstract Expressionism, is a non-objective style emphasizing visual elements rather than subject. Artists looked inward and strove to express their emotional state in visual terms. They used bold colors with strong contrasts and emphasized spontaneity. Creating these paintings often involved energetic physical movement, a method referred to as action painting. The resulting paintings were large in scale and expressed movement, color, and vitality. This class will focus on the major Abstract Expressionists and their works.

Description: For gorgeous melody, spellbinding coloratura, and virtuoso vocal fireworks, I Puritani has few equals. On January 10, the first new Met production of Bellini’s final masterpiece in nearly 50 years—a striking staging by Charles Edwards, who makes his company directorial debut after many successes as a set designer—arrives in cinemas worldwide. The Met has assembled a world-beating quartet of stars, conducted by Marco Armiliato, for the demanding principal roles. Soprano Lisette Oropesa and tenor Lawrence Brownlee are Elvira and Arturo, brought together by love and torn apart by the political rifts of the English Civil War, with baritone Artur Ruciński as Riccardo, betrothed to Elvira against her will, and bass-baritone Christian Van Horn as Elvira’s sympathetic uncle, Giorgio.

From Odysseus and the Arabo-Norman Golden Age to the Mafia and modern mythmakers like Garibaldi and Coppola, Sicily’s story is rich, complex, and central to Western history. Description: After years of anticipation, a truly unmissable event arrives in cinemas worldwide on March 21 as the electrifying Lise Davidsen tackles one of the ultimate roles for dramatic soprano: the Irish princess Isolde in Wagner’s transcendent meditation on love and death. Heroic tenor Michael Spyres stars opposite Davidsen as the love-drunk Tristan. The momentous occasion also marks the advent of a new, Met-debut staging by Yuval Sharon—hailed by The New York Times as “the most visionary opera director of his generation” and the first American to direct an opera at the famed Wagner festival in Bayreuth—as well as Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s first time leading Tristan und Isolde at the Met. Mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova reprises her signature portrayal of Brangäne, alongside bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny, who sings Kurwenal after celebrated Met appearances in Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer and Ring cycle. Bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green makes an important role debut as King Marke.

Description: On May 30, the Metropolitan Opera’s 2025–26 Live in HD season comes to a close with a live transmission of American composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s first opera, a magical-realist portrait of Mexico’s painterly power couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, with libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz. Fashioned as a reversal of the Orpheus and Euridice myth, the story depicts Frida, sung by leading mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, leaving the underworld on the Day of the Dead and reuniting with Diego, portrayed by baritone Carlos Álvarez. The famously feuding pair briefly relive their tumultuous love, embracing both the passion and the pain before bidding the land of the living a final farewell. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Met-premiere staging of Frank’s opera, a “confident, richly imagined score” (The New Yorker) that “bursts with color and fresh individuality” (Los Angeles Times). The vibrant new production, taking enthusiastic inspiration from Frida and Diego’s paintings, is directed and choreographed by Deborah Colker.
