Need help? Use the menu below for additional instructions on how to navigate this page. Otherwise, you can scroll through the page to view current offerings.

Locate a Specific Program

All available programs are listed in START DATE order on this page. If you wish to filter out programs by the instructor, location, day of week, keyword (e.g. Opera) or search by a course ID / SKU, visit our search page here.

Helpful tip! The first two letters in a program/course ID indicates the program's location (e.g. 'EC' is Eckerd College and 'OL' is Other Location, not a regularly scheduled site).

'Add to Cart' button not available

If the ‘Add to Cart’ button is not shown for a specific program, either:

  • a) registration is not currently opened, is full and/or
  • b) you are not logged into your member account and/or
  • c) your membership expiration date falls before the program's end date and the program is available to members only. You will need to renew (add a membership) to your cart before registering for the program.

    Presenter/Facilitator(s): Richard "Rick" Kistner
    Fee (nonmember): $51.00

Location: Eckerd College Flamingo (CEC 114)
    Seats Available: 35
    Description:

With cries of “Make America Great Again” politicians often point to the 1950’s as a time of peace and prosperity, when children could walk to school without fear and we left our front doors unlocked. Ozzie and Harriet slept in separate beds and the most subversive thing on TV was Dick Clark and “American Bandstand.” “Those were the good old days” we all think. But we tend to look at the past through rose-colored glasses. That decade was one of the greatest in history in terms of growth and prosperity to be sure, but it was also a time of great political upheaval and social angst. Our sessions will examine “The Fabulous Fifties” from a historical perspective and recall the people, places and events that had us simultaneously beaming with pride and trembling with uncertainty.

    Description:
In the 1960’s America underwent a metamorphosis as radical as any decade in history. Change was evident in every facet of our daily lives from hair length to fashions, how we viewed our neighbors, what we thought of our government institutions and even the music we listened to. The decade began with the hope of the Kennedy Administration, then suffered with his assassination; we endured the angst of the War in Vietnam, major urban riots and the continuing struggle for Civil Rights. But it was also the decade of the Beatles, of Woodstock, and the so-called “Summer of Love” and ended with the mankind's greatest scientific achievement – landing on the moon. Our sessions will recall this roller-coaster ride of issues and events and the new values that transformed our national psyche forever.
