Description: Frank Gehry is one of the most recognized and acclaimed architects of our era. His bold post-modern shapes and unusual materials make his buildings unique and easily identifiable. He is essentially a Deconstructivist, an architect whose designs appear to be fragmented. Stylistically, he subverts architectural tradition and creates buildings that embody motion and seemingly flow, curve, and bend in unusual and unexpected ways. This class will examine several of Gehry's landmark designs such as the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Dancing House (or Fred and Ginger building) in Prague, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles.

Description: The decade known as “The Roaring Twenties” an era of exuberance, unbridled optimism and excess, came to a crashing halt in the final days of 1929 as the stock market crash sent the world into a downward spiraling depression, the likes of which had not been seen before. In the early months of the new decade an equally devastating environmental disaster struck in the form of multiple massive dust storms, giving Middle America the unflattering nickname “The Dust Bowl.” Millionaires became paupers and the everyday American struggled just to get by. The result was a major political upheaval as the nation turned to Democrat Franklin D. Roosevelt to lift the country from its knees. The strife of those years garnered a new nickname for the era – “The Dirty Thirties”. Our sessions will cover the major events of the decade and how we coped.

Description: Comedic singer/actress Martha Raye — aka “The Big Mouth” — was the film, stage, and television industry’s larger-than-life go-to girl for comic, loud, loony, and insufferable characters. The slapstick, which began when she was a child, hid significant, tireless talent, brilliant comic timing and notable vocal skill. But it also covered up a deeply troubled personal life that led to seven marriages. Deeply devoted to America’s soldiers, Raye extensively donated her services to the USO from WWII throughout her life, earning her the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for her volunteer efforts and services to our troops. Raye was buried with full military honors among the soldiers she dearly loved at Fort Bragg, NC.

Description: In this course, we will be exploring the idea of compassion and what it means to start to cultivate a compassionate heart towards ourselves and others. There is a connection between compassion and personal well-being. Research suggests that as we become more aware of ‘being’ with ourselves in a compassionate way, we gradually begin to recognize and experience a more fully embodied experience of who we are, which alters our chemistry and nervous system. To directly embody and experience the benefits of cultivating and anchoring attention in our body and heart requires learning how to train the mind and connect it to the intelligence of the heart."

Session 1 (April 7th 1-3pm): Invasion in the Bay. Location: Discovery Center Classroom, 700 2nd Avenue NE, St. Petersburg
- During this session, participants are invited into the Discovery Center's state of the art classroom to learn from our educators. Enjoy a behind-the-scenes peek into the complex world of invasive species—how they arrived here, how they impact the local ecosystem, and what Tampa Bay Watch and other organizations are doing to solve the problem. You'll be guided through a hands-on dissection, meet invasive animal ambassadors (perhaps our cane toads, Willy and Wonka, will make an appearance), and practice using citizen science tools. Expect to leave this program with new knowledge and skills that will help you advocate for smarter management of invasive species in and around Tampa Bay.
Session 2 (April 14th 1-3 pm): Water Quality—Challenges and Solutions. Location: Boat-based aboard Tampa Bay Watch Discovery Center's eco-vessel, 400 2nd Avenue NE, Slip Q47, St. Petersburg
- Board the eco-vessel Discovery for an introduction to Tampa Bay, Tampa Bay Watch, and ecology. Then we'll dive into water quality on the water—what causes water quality problems, how water quality impacts humans and animals, research and solutions. You'll hear about locally relevant issues such as harmful algal blooms, plastic pollution, industrial and mercury contamination and more. During this boat trip, participants will assist with data collection for a hands-on citizen science project that helps scientists understand how animal populations are affected by water quality changes and events. Discovery Center educators will also conduct a plankton tow and share findings under a microscope. The harmful algal cells, microorganisms, plastic particles and other ecosystem components we find will offer a unique peek into the current health of Tampa Bay!
Session 3 (April 21st 1-3 pm): Giving Back to the Bay. Location: Lassing Park, 2042 Beach Drive SE, St. Petersburg
- Tampa Bay gives us so many opportunities to enjoy life by the water. Giving back to the bay is a great way to feel connected to our natural surroundings while ensuring that future generations can also enjoy them. Participants in this session will spend part of the day with members of Tampa Bay Watch, who will lead a field trip to Lassing Park. We'll visit a recent Living Shoreline installation and have the option to get our feet wet while hearing about why and how these volunteer-supported projects benefit humans, our local ecosystem and the global ocean. You'll discover what happens behind the scenes to plan, coordinate and fund a Living Shoreline, find out why our water quality depends on healthy habitats and build a vertical oyster garden to take home or donate for installation on a local dock. This is an active program, so wear comfortable clothing and prepare to get your shoes muddy, if you'd like!

Description: Two-time Tony Award–winning composer Jeanine Tesori’s powerful new opera Grounded, commissioned by the Met and based on librettist George Brant’s acclaimed play, wrestles with the ethical quandaries and psychological toll of 21st-century warfare. Mezzo-soprano Emily D’Angelo, one of opera’s most compelling young stars, portrays Jess, a hot-shot fighter pilot whose unplanned pregnancy takes her out of the cockpit and lands her in Las Vegas, operating a Reaper drone halfway around the world. As she struggles to adjust to this new way of doing battle, she fights to maintain her sanity, and her soul, as she is called to rain down death by remote control. Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin oversees the Met premiere of Tesori’s kaleidoscopic score and a cast that also features tenor Ben Bliss as the Wyoming rancher who becomes Jess’s husband. Michael Mayer’s high-tech staging, using a vast array of LED screens, presents a variety of perspectives on the action, including the drone’s predatory view from high above.

Description: In 1887 a struggling British physician attempted to supplement his income with a story he submitted to a British Magazine. It was called “A Study in Scarlet” and introduced the world to the inimitable team of Sherlock Holmes and his chronicler Dr. John Watson. The physician’s name was Arthur Conan Doyle and over the following forty years he would continue to regale the reading public with the exploits of the infinitely logical reasoning of a character who has become one of the greatest literary creations in the annals of publishing. The character created by Sir Arthur has inspired hundreds of films, stage plays, books, articles, TV and radio programs, and even video games. It continues to do so to this very day. Description: Since our nation’s founding, the most significant internal issue faced by our society has been the relationship between the races. The struggle for equality has taken place privately and publicly in many arenas including business, politics, the arts, and significantly professional sports. Breaking the color line in America’s National Pastime was a difficult task and it took the efforts of two very different men. One was Branch Rickey, a 64 year old white baseball executive for the Brooklyn Dodgers. The other was 26 year old Jack Roosevelt “Jackie” Robinson who withstood incredible abuse to become the first African American to play major League Baseball. Robinson not only withstood the challenges he faced, he excelled in his endeavors and proved by rugged determination that members of his race deserved an equal place in this most public arena. Some historians rate his accomplishments as equal in significance with the Supreme Court’s decision to outlaw segregation. Join us as we review the life and career of this extraordinary individual.

Description: Dubbed “The Great One” by Orson Welles, Jackie Gleason was one of the funniest men of the 20th century—but his life was nothing to laugh at, a man whose addiction to alcohol and gluttony was as monumental as his talent as a comic, actor, and mime. The Jackie Gleason of legend was the star of one of the most successful sitcoms of all time, while the private Jackie Gleason was haunted by insecurity and a dark childhood in which his father abandoned the family during the Depression and his brother died when he was a child. His wealth and extravagance were well known, yet to view his performances today is to witness comic talent so great that it takes the breath away. Rediscover the life and comedy of Jackie Gleason.

Description: This is an encore presentation. Previously recorded.
Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts his first Met performances of Strauss’s white-hot one-act tragedy, which receives its first new production at the company in 20 years. Claus Guth, one of Europe’s leading opera directors, gives the biblical story—already filtered through the beautiful and strange imagination of Oscar Wilde’s play—a psychologically perceptive, Victorian-era setting rich in symbolism and subtle shades of darkness and light. Headlining the new staging is soprano Elza van den Heever as the abused and unhinged antiheroine, who demands the head of Jochanaan, sung by celebrated baritone Peter Mattei. Tenor Gerhard Siegel is Salome’s lecherous stepfather, King Herod, with mezzo-soprano Michelle DeYoung as his wife, Herodias, and tenor Piotr Buszewski as Narraboth.
Sung in German.
