Members must be signed into their account and their membership expiration date must go beyond the program's end date to register. Registrants' contact information will be shared with the volunteer SIG/Member Event facilitator to communicate updates/changes.

If you have Acrylic Flow Art painting experience and are able to mix paints and complete flow paintings independently, this special interest group is for you. Practice your techniques, obtain guidance from facilitators,  and enjoy some fellowship with other OLLI acrylic flow painters. No formal instruction provided.

    Learn more here:

    https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1JGqxaALbaoqQlW8cgnbgcqwoKGf_edlD?usp=sharing

Come with your own canvas and paint materials or just bring any size canvas and for a small materials fee and use the paints and additives provided by the facilitator. (The fee will be paid directly in cash at the time of the SIG and will vary from artist to artist based on the amount of colors, quality of paints selected and the overall size of your canvas. See below for more information.)

During the session, painting tools and materials (pallet knives, tweezers, torches, spinners, chains, gloves, paper towels, mixing cups, etc) will be available for use. In addition, a ‘sealing’ station with Minwax Polycrylic Sealer will be available to seal fully dried paintings from your previous OLLI Flow Art classes. Due to the size of Room CE-309, each date of this SIG will be limited to twelve (12) registrants.

Materials Fee: If you are electing to purchase mixed acrylic paint and additives for your canvas instead of bringing your own, the cost will be based upon the size of your canvas in square inches and technique(s) you plan to apply. (Approximately $1 - $1.50 per ounce)

For example:  A 16” x 20” canvas (320 square inches of surface canvas) with ½” depth edges (18 square inches of edge canvas) will have a total surface to be painted of 336 square inches.  The 336 square inches will require approximately 13 ounces of paint (335/25) resulting in a paint cost of between $13 and $20.50.

Additional Notes:  If you have Acrylic Flow Art painting experience and are able to mix paints and complete flow paintings independently, this special interest group is for you. Practice your techniques and enjoy some fellowship with other OLLI acrylic flow painters.

A brief review of the early history of cosmology will be followed by an update on recent developments and a preview of what will come soon.

Join me as we explore why footmen could not have facial hair and why housekeepers were referred to as Mrs. even though they were unmarried.

After the turmoil of the 1960s, most Americans hoped for a period of peace and prosperity, but it was not to be. The 1970s began with a deepening morass in Vietnam and a ratcheting up of the Cold War. Mid-decade brought the greatest political scandal in American history and the resignation of a president. Overshadowing the era was ‘The Great Inflation,’ with prices soaring and families struggling to keep up.

But not all was bleak. The decade saw major technological breakthroughs—the first microprocessor, home computers, the VCR, early cell phones, and the founding of Microsoft. Medicine and science advanced rapidly, and in sports, figures like Pelé, Hank Aaron, Muhammad Ali, and Nadia Comăneci dominated the headlines. Moviegoers thrilled to hits like Jaws and The Godfather and witnessed the launch of the Star Wars phenomenon.
It was an exciting time to be alive, and our program will highlight the ups and downs of this remarkable decade.

The momentous occasion also marks the advent of a new, Met-debut staging by Yuval Sharon—hailed by The New York Times as “the most visionary opera director of his generation” and the first American to direct an opera at the famed Wagner festival in Bayreuth—as well as Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s first time leading Tristan und Isolde at the Met. Mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova reprises her signature portrayal of Brangäne, alongside bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny, who sings Kurwenal after celebrated Met appearances in Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer and Ring cycle. Bass-baritone Ryan Speedo Green makes an important role debut as King Marke.

At the same time, these weekend parties required enormous numbers of footmen, maids, and kitchen staff in order to serve these guests. Learn about the lives of the domestic staff as we take a peek downstairs.  The years between 1860 and 1914 were the “golden age” of the English country house. 3% of the population owned 80%  of the land. The Dukes of Devonshire, the Rothschilds, and the Churchills amongst others hosted week-end parties for other members of Britain’s elite, although the term “week-end” was considered a vulgar Americanism.

    Description:
This four-session series focuses on what we, as responsible citizens of the planet, can do to help fight climate change and environmental degradation. After briefly outlining the challenges, possible solutions are discussed. Organizations leading the way in addressing these challenges are highlighted. Practical steps we can take, both as individuals and as members of society, are presented.

    1. Renewable Energy and Smart Grids
Today, solar energy production facilities are cheaper to build and maintain than their fossil-fuel counterparts. Artificial intelligence (AI) demands an incredible amount of energy, and unless we follow the footsteps of countries such as China and invest heavily in renewable energy, we risk becoming uncompetitive in the AI arena or paying dearly for power. The costs and benefits of investing in solar, wind, and other renewable energy resources, as well as developing smart grids, will be debated.
(Suggested reading: No Impact Man by Colin Beaven, also a documentary film.)

    2. Transportation
We are undoubtedly a car-dependent society. The most popular vehicles in the U.S. today are gas-guzzling trucks and SUVs. Meanwhile, citizens in other developed countries are increasingly turning to electric vehicles and high-speed electric train networks. What needs to happen in the U.S. to reduce the number and size of private combustion engines, create a robust EV infrastructure, improve public transportation, and build an attractive high-speed electric rail network?
(Suggested reading: Limits to Growth: The 30-Year Update by Donella Meadows.)

    3. Food: Local, Organic, and Composting
Everybody eats. What we eat, how we eat, and where our food is produced all play a major role in our carbon footprint. Some advocate reducing red meat consumption, particularly beef, which is environmentally inefficient and emits significant amounts of climate-warming methane. Others, such as Michael Pollan, argue that meat production can be environmentally responsible and that organically grown produce alone is not the solution. We explore these perspectives and the environmental benefits of changing our diets.
(Recommended reading: The Omnivore’s Dilemma by Michael Pollan.)

    4. Consumption
Plastics are everywhere. Many of us remember when glass and cardboard containers dominated packaging. Recycling has become more common worldwide, but it presents environmental challenges of its own. We are a consumption-based society and, despite the growing popularity of secondhand shops, often discard items rather than repair them. Buying new things can feel good—but can we consume less and still be prosperous and happy? What are the limits to growth, and can consumption ever be environmentally beneficial?

Arguably one of the most outstanding US collections in Modern Art is The Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, housed in a Surrealist-inspired building, containing the magnificent collection of Reynolds and Eleanor Morse, who were friends with Dalí and purchased some of his most important masterpieces.

    Description:

On May 30, the Metropolitan Opera’s 2025–26 Live in HD season comes to a close with a live transmission of American composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s first opera, a magical-realist portrait of Mexico’s painterly power couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, with libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz. Fashioned as a reversal of the Orpheus and Euridice myth, the story depicts Frida, sung by leading mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, leaving the underworld on the Day of the Dead and reuniting with Diego, portrayed by baritone Carlos Álvarez. The famously feuding pair briefly relive their tumultuous love, embracing both the passion and the pain before bidding the land of the living a final farewell. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Met-premiere staging of Frank’s opera, a “confident, richly imagined score” (The New Yorker) that “bursts with color and fresh individuality” (Los Angeles Times). The vibrant new production, taking enthusiastic inspiration from Frida and Diego’s paintings, is directed and choreographed by Deborah Colker.
