Need help? Use the menu below for additional instructions on how to navigate this page. Otherwise, you can scroll through the page to view current offerings.

All available programs are listed in START DATE order on this page. If you wish to filter out programs by the instructor, location, day of week, keyword (e.g. Opera) or search by a course ID / SKU, visit our search page here.

Helpful tip! The first two letters in a program/course ID indicates the program's location (e.g. 'EC' is Eckerd College and 'OL' is Other Location, not a regularly scheduled site).

  • a) registration is not currently opened, is full and/or
  • b) you are not logged into your member account and/or

    Times: 2:30 PM–4:00 PM
Location: Eckerd College Flamingo (CEC 114)
    Seats Available: 55
    Description:
When confronted with the concept of God, people in the United States more than likely envision a being gleaned from concepts of the populous Abrahamic traditions. Perhaps a human-like, wizened, omnipotent being from a Renaissance work of art. One of the hallmarks of this conception of divinity is that it is transcendent of the world, set apart and somewhere “out there”. This conception of divinity, along with notable historical events and movements has lent itself to perceptions of humanity being separate from nature rather than emergent from it, perpetuating environmental degradation and structural violence against marginalized communities. Many cultures, however, have understood the inverse to be true: divinity is imminent, rather than transcendent, existing alongside humanity in various forms within the natural world. So too is humanity a contributing species of a vast web of life. Furthermore, these cultures see harmony with this lattice work of life as vital to human flourishing. This course will examine the immanent conception of divinity present in extant and emergent animistic cultural traditions and how this perception can reinforce and empower communities against a rapidly changing climate.

    Description:
April 30, 2026 will mark the 100th birthday of ”The Main Street of America" - U.S. Route 66. This pathway that extends from Chicago to the Pacific was one of the earliest numbered U.S. Highways and became the first completely paved transcontinental route. For decades it served as a vital link for Americans traveling east and west until it’s decommissioning in the mid-1980s. But the highway refused to die and Route 66 associations sprung up in the States it passed through, all of them celebrating its impact on the formation of modern America. Known for its colorful kitschy attractions, the roadway has been celebrated in story and song, especially for the important role it played during the Great Depression. It remains alive today by those who maintain the legacy of this storied “Mother Road,” the name bestowed upon it by John Steinbeck in his classic work The Grapes of Wrath.

It remains alive today by those who maintain the legacy of this storied “Mother Road,” the name bestowed upon it by John Steinbeck in his classic work The Grapes of Wrath.

Originally designed as a tribunal of six justices to arbitrate disputes between the States, the Court grew in stature and power under the leadership of John Marshall who served as Chief Justice from 1801 to 1835. His opinions helped to lay the basis for Constitutional Law and established the Court as a co-equal with the Legislative and Executive Branches of Government. Today the court touches the lives of every American in ways the Founding Fathers could not have foreseen. Indeed, the power to make appointments to the Court has become a main issue of Presidential elections for the past several decades. Our session will examine the history of the Court, its obligations and many of the controversial decisions that have shaped American life as we know it in the 21st century.

This course traces the life and innovations of Nikola Tesla, from his early years and university studies in Graz and Prague to his groundbreaking work in electricity and wireless technology. We will explore his collaborations and rivalries, including his work with Thomas Edison, the “War of the Currents” between AC and DC power, and his partnership with George Westinghouse, which led to the lighting of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Key topics include Tesla’s telautomaton invention, his wireless experiments, and his race against Marconi in the development of radio. We will examine the Wardenclyffe—Tesla’s ambitious wireless transmission tower, his work during World War I with Telefunken, and his interactions with Franklin Roosevelt. We will conclude with Tesla’s later-life invention of the particle beam weapon, his negotiations to sell it to the Allies during World War II, and the mystery surrounding his secret papers after his death.

During the Baroque era, females who chose to be artists worked in the genre open to them – still life painting, primarily floral arrangements. At the time, increasing urbanization and wealth of Dutch and Flemish society emphasized the home, personal possessions, commerce, trade, learning and all aspects of everyday life. Floral paintings were especially prominent and their refined execution, their subjects and their symbolism appealed to a cultivated audience. Although male artists seem to dominate this genre, it is because little attention over the years has focused on the works of the many women who made painting flowers their profession. African Americans have served in every US military conflict, fighting for both their country and their own rights. From Black patriots in the Revolutionary War to the 180,000 African Americans who fought for the Union in the Civil War, their contributions have shaped American history. After the war, Black soldiers gained congressional approval to enlist in the peacetime Army, leading to the formation of the “Buffalo Soldiers.” This course traces their service from the War of 1812 to World War II, highlighting their valor in conflicts abroad and their struggle against segregation and discrimination at home. It is the story of their resilience, sacrifice, and fight for equality in a nation that often failed to recognize their service.

In 1937 the Nazis, intending to rouse public opinion against these artists, mounted an exhibit of degenerate artworks displayed chaotically and labeled with derisive comments. Hitler’s armies also requisitioned works of art and important cultural artifacts, hoarding them to be collected and cataloged for Germany and possibly to be destroyed. Description:

Impressionist painters revolutionized art with a new style that emphasized changing atmospheric effects and luminous color harmonies. Their unblended brushstrokes of pure color and simple compositions broke dramatically with traditional pictorial techniques. Rejecting historical, mythological, and religious themes, they instead focused on the rapidly shifting aspects of modern life—capturing scenes from the countryside, the home, and the city. This course examines the work of Monet, Renoir, Degas, Cassatt, and Morisot from the 1860s to the 1910s, exploring their stylistic and technical innovations, personal lives, and the cultural forces shaping their artistry. Participants will gain an enhanced ability to experience nature and artistic depictions of it with a newly developed sensory, coloristic, and immersive awareness.

    Description:

For gorgeous melody, spellbinding coloratura, and virtuoso vocal fireworks, I Puritani has few equals. On January 10, the first new Met production of Bellini’s final masterpiece in nearly 50 years—a striking staging by Charles Edwards, who makes his company directorial debut after many successes as a set designer—arrives in cinemas worldwide. The Met has assembled a world-beating quartet of stars, conducted by Marco Armiliato, for the demanding principal roles. Soprano Lisette Oropesa and tenor Lawrence Brownlee are Elvira and Arturo, brought together by love and torn apart by the political rifts of the English Civil War, with baritone Artur Ruciński as Riccardo, betrothed to Elvira against her will, and bass-baritone Christian Van Horn as Elvira’s sympathetic uncle, Giorgio.

After years of anticipation, a truly unmissable event arrives in cinemas worldwide on March 21 as the electrifying Lise Davidsen tackles one of the ultimate roles for dramatic soprano: the Irish princess Isolde in Wagner’s transcendent meditation on love and death. Heroic tenor Michael Spyres stars opposite Davidsen as the love-drunk Tristan. The momentous occasion also marks the advent of a new, Met-debut staging by Yuval Sharon—hailed by The New York Times as “the most visionary opera director of his generation” and the first American to direct an opera at the famed Wagner festival in Bayreuth—as well as Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s first time leading Tristan und Isolde at the Met. Mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova reprises her signature portrayal of Brangäne, alongside bass-baritone Tomasz Konieczny, who sings Kurwenal after celebrated Met appearances in Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer and Ring cycle. Description:

On May 30, the Metropolitan Opera’s 2025–26 Live in HD season comes to a close with a live transmission of American composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s first opera, a magical-realist portrait of Mexico’s painterly power couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, with libretto by Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Nilo Cruz. Fashioned as a reversal of the Orpheus and Euridice myth, the story depicts Frida, sung by leading mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard, leaving the underworld on the Day of the Dead and reuniting with Diego, portrayed by baritone Carlos Álvarez. The famously feuding pair briefly relive their tumultuous love, embracing both the passion and the pain before bidding the land of the living a final farewell. Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Met-premiere staging of Frank’s opera, a “confident, richly imagined score” (The New Yorker) that “bursts with color and fresh individuality” (Los Angeles Times). The vibrant new production, taking enthusiastic inspiration from Frida and Diego’s paintings, is directed and choreographed by Deborah Colker.
