Description: Our world is getting smarter. Advances in machine learning and contactless sensors have given rise to ambient intelligence – physical spaces that are responsive to the presence of humans. Ambient intelligence in healthcare means making regular hospital zones “intelligent” by using contactless sensors and algorithms to create physical spaces that are sensitive to human presence. These spaces can communicate with humans and collect their health-related data for diagnostic purposes. Instructor Michael Bice will reveal the future of our healthcare spaces: ambient intelligence.

Additional Notes: This month: Rising: Dispatches from the New American Shore by Elizabeth Rush
Since its publication, the book has garnered numerous awards. Rising was a Pulitzer Prize finalist, winner of the National Outdoor Book Award, and a Chicago Tribune "Top 10" selection. In addition, it won the "Best Book of 2018" award from three separate publications, The Guardian, Publishers Weekly and Library Journal. In this collection of essays, Rush profiles various communities across the Atlantic, Gulf, and Pacific coasts that are especially vulnerable to rising sea levels, weaving personal stories together with historical and scientific data about the fragile ecosystems along our shorelines. With her incisive and moving profiles of coastal communities, the author invites readers to consider the complex intersections of race, gender, socio-economic class, and climate change.

Description: In 1847, in a small Ohio town near the shores of Lake Erie, was born a small boy who befuddled those he met. He didn’t talk until the age of four and when he enrolled in school was sent home as “unteachable.” Home schooled, he developed a level of genius rarely seen and would go on to change the world with his many inventions. But the image of a kindly old white haired man working in his laboratory is largely myth. Thomas Edison was a product of the gilded age and his main goal in life was to get rich. He would do whatever he could to achieve that goal, ruthlessly crushing competitors, taking credit for the work of others and estranging himself from his children. In the end his poor business decisions led to the loss of his fortune. Even so, life as we know it today was inexorably shaped by the man known as “The Wizard of Menlo Park.”

Description: “Let women stay at home and hold their peace,” says a male character in Aeschylus’ play Seven Against Thebes, written in 467 B.C. Wandering Women have been ignoring his advice ever since. In this talk Margo Hammond, a world traveler and writer herself, will introduce you to a whole cast of journeywomen who neither stayed home nor held their tongues. Like British travel writer Freya Stark who was one of the first Westerners to explore southern Arabia (and who continued to travel and write until her death at 100). And Cheryl Strayed who hiked 1,100 mile solo along the Pacific Crest Trail after the death of her mother, and wrote about how it allowed her to reinvent herself (including giving herself a new name). Learn about these intrepid female travelers who trekked around the world and wrote about it and be inspired to write down the stories of your own journeys.

Description: Self-portraiture has a long tradition while selfies—photos we take of ourselves with our mobile phones—are relatively new. Both, however, spring from the same human impulse: to be seen and shape the way we are seen. While most of our selfies—taken with friends or with the hamburger we are about to eat—will never be mistaken for a Rembrandt, some have been recognized as works of art. Join Margo Hammond in a survey of self portraiture and get inspired to create more artistic selfies of your own.

Description: The Venetian Lagoon was a decidedly inhospitable place for human settlement, which explains why there is little Roman history there. So what drove people to begin settling the area in substantial numbers starting in the fifth century CE, and how did they survive, and even thrive? This class explores the ways in which the Venetians intervened in their particular lagoon environment, and the mainland beyond, in radical ways that directed the fortunes of this extraordinary empire for centuries.

Description: Dr. Michael Kahn leads students through the epic and complex history of this portion of the Balkan peninsula, Adriatic Sea, and former Yugoslavia. Description: This year marks the 60th anniversary of Kennedy's epoch-making visit to Berlin. For almost 45 years the German Metropolis, divided by a 98-mile- long concrete wall, was synonymous with the Cold War in Europe. Join German historian Anette Isaacs for a fascinating look back to this special Wednesday in June of 1963 that was so tremendous that it inspired the President to turn to his aide Ted Sorensen and say: “We’ll never have another day like this one, as long as we live.”

Description: Born into a minor noble family, the young woman who would become Catherine the Great married the heir to the Russian throne. She became empress by sheer determination and used principles espoused by Enlightenment philosophers to guide her rule over her vast empire. For more than three decades she controlled Russia’s government while facing domestic rebellion, foreign wars, and political change. She westernized Russia and brought it into full participation in Europe’s political and cultural life. Along the way, Catherine championed the arts, reorganized the Russian law code, and took steps to improve the welfare of the people. Come explore the fascinating story behind the inspiring, complex figure that was Russia’s longest-reigning empress.

Description: Over the course of four years, enslaved people worked to turn the Civil War into a freedom war. Slowly but surely, they pushed President Abraham Lincoln and his commanders in the field toward embracing emancipation as a war aim and to compel them to take the giant steps forward needed to abolish slavery once and for all. On June 19, 1865, the federal government finally met that objective, declaring slavery dead across the country. This momentous event marked a new birth of freedom—an occasion we now commemorate as Juneteenth.
